4What is Financial Independence (FI)?
Our Financial Independence Calculator estimates when your investments can cover your daily expenses. Financial Independence (FI) is achieved when your accumulated portfolio generates enough passive income to pay for your living expenses indefinitely. It means you no longer need to work for money and are free to choose how to spend your time.
The Math of SWR and Sentry FIRE targets
Your target FI number is determined by your annual living expenses and your Safe Withdrawal Rate (SWR). SWR is the percentage of your portfolio you can withdraw each year without running out of money. The industry standard is the 4% rule (derived from the Trinity Study), which states that withdrawing 4% of a diversified portfolio annually will likely sustain it for 30+ years. The math translates to needing a portfolio that is 25 times your annual living expenses.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the 25x Rule?
The 25x Rule states that you are financially independent when you accumulate 25 times your annual living expenses in assets. For example, if you spend $40,000 per year, your target FI number is $1,000,000 ($40,000 * 25).
How does the savings rate affect the time to FI?
Your savings rate is the single most powerful factor. If you save 10% of your income, you must work 9 years to save for 1 year of expenses. If you save 50%, you save 1 year of expenses for every year worked, reducing the time to FI to under 17 years.
